IP Logging Policy

DRAFT Policy Statement on IP logging Sydney Indymedia has adopted a policy of not logging the IP addresses of computers which are used to post, or read articles on our site. In the event that the website is attacked, or is overloaded with requests to the extent that the site is rendered unusable, we may turn IP logging on only for the time necessary to stop the disruption, and block offending IP addresses. The logging will be turned off when the problem is solved, the logs will be deleted, and a notice will be sent to the publicly archived organising list (either imc-sydney@cat.org.au, or imc-sydney-content@cat.org.au), notifying the collective of the actions taken. Users should know that even though Sydney IMC does not log IPs, it may be possible for networks between our servers and our users to log IPs. Whistleblowers, and others concerned about privacy need to post from net cafes. For those who are interested in privacy on their home computers, there is software such as TOR as released from the Electronic Frontier Foundation - it uses a series of proxy servers that stop the correct IP from being known to just about anyone including those in the TOR network: http://tor.eff.org/. There are also encryption resources listed at: http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/static/security.html
